Selkirk Co-housing initiative has been kicked into action by a terrific site coming onto the market in early April 2011 at a very unexpectedly affordable price. Having potential land first is a somewhat unusual way round for developing a cohousing project, but the scarcity of suitable sites has limited our enthusiasm until now.

Senior(ish) Cohousing

Myself and my husband are in our early fifties, and live on a 5 acre rural smallholding with a huge greenhouse (over 2 acres!) near Selby in Yorkshire. We grow strawberries and tomatoes which we sell to local farm shops, box schemes and at farmers’ markets. My husband works full time on the smallholding, whilst I have a full time job and help out at evenings and weekends.

However, there’s just too much work for two of us, so we are looking for like-minded people who are passionate about great-tasting food, who care about the environment and would jump at the chance of living in the countryside.

The Ramparts - Zero Carbon housing in Hastings

The Ramparts is an exemplary sustainable development, comprising seven zero carbon homes, a healing arts centre with associated shop and activity space.

This development is not currently designed specifically as a cohousing scheme but has the POTENTIAL to become one if linked to an existing forming cohousing group or if a group is formed for this purpose. There is space for a common house.

Many forming groups struggle to find land or sites with planning permission so this could be an opportunity to short cut some of the barriers.
