Featherstone Lodge, Cohousing in Sydenham, London SE23 Sydenham in south-east London (it's on the new East London Overground line) will be the location of one of the first cohousing communities within 30 minutes of central London. Our plan is to convert and extend Featherstone Lodge, a large attractive Victorian house, to provide a mix of apartments and small houses for a community of over-50s. Our site is on the top of Sydenham Hill, near the junction of Eliot Bank and Kirkdale. Featherstone Lodge itself can provide about 7 spacious self-contained apartments. There is also a large and attractive garden. There is the potential to add a further 20 dwellings around this garden without detracting from its appearance or infringing the various Tree Preservation Orders. Featherstone Lodge has been bought by Hanover Housing Association, which is committed to working with us to complete the development and create a cohousing community. Each household must include someone over the age of 50, but otherwise we have few formal membership criteria; the important thing is to be committed to a cohousing ethos. Our intention is to offer various sizes of home and a choice of tenures. Some of the units will be designated 'affordable', and will probably be offered on a shared ownership basis. Our website www.featherstonecohousing.co.uk has more information about us, about the project and the designs for the site, and about our progress so far. If you are interested in joining our group, please check on our website whether we are currently accepting new applications for membership. You can e-mail us at johnandjuliafarr[at]hotmail[dot]com.
